Scheckenrock is a brilliantly realised document of a live performance
by the Australian laptopper Samartzis and German percussionist Vorfeld
in March 2007. Though Improv snobs might turn their noses up at their
approach, it´s the to-and-fro interplay that captivates here, each
responding to the other´s interventions as if they´re engaged in a
game of chess. Vorfeld´s fabulously eerie bowed string workout midway
through “Krause” is slowly encroached on by low-end pulsations from
Samartzis´s electronics, to which the former replies with a series of
string creaks and groans that sound curiously electronic in nature.
Samartzis´s glistening, finely modulated sprys of static and white
noise then seem to swathe the action in fine mist. There´s great skill
on display here, as somehow the pair conjure perfectly apposite
gestures without resorting to sonic mimicry or simple accompaniment.
